The unruly weather conditions all over Northern and Northeast India have a caused a huge destruction to life and property without sparing anybody at all. In another such instance, a lightning strike today burnt down a traditional Garo house (Nok Achik) belonging to the former CM of the state of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma, this afternoon.
Garo Hills has been seeing a period of unruly weather conditions for more than 2 weeks now with lightning and thunder becoming more commonplace than it ever was in the past two decades – to such an extent that the region is yet to see summer fully. Rains have been accompanied by hailstorms along with lightning and thunder – leaving many vulnerable.
The incident today took place at about 3:30 pm this afternoon after lightning struck the traditional thatched house leading to the entire structure being burnt down before anyone could react. The traditional house is in the village of Gambegre in West Garo Hills.
“There were no casualties in the fire and an assessment of damage is still being carried out. The cause of the fire is a lightning strike that hit the dormitory,” said superintendent of police, WGH, DR MGR Kumar.
