A direct contest between the Congress and the NPP is beginning to appear as a possibility for the upcoming by-election to Ampati constituency with only two candidates, so far, filing nominations even as the last date for the same draws closer.
Congress candidate and former chief minister Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D Shira and the NPP’s Clement G Momin were the only candidates to have filed their nominations.
While the Congress candidate filed her nomination before the returning officer at Ampati on Tuesday, the NPP’s Clement G Momin filed his nomination a day later, on Wednesday.
The last date for filing of nominations is the 10th of May.
While there is speculation that the BJP could field its former candidate Bakul Hajong, as indicated by Meghalaya in-charge Nalin Kohli recently, the party is yet to decide on the matter. Bakul Hajong has also stated earlier that he will contest the Ampati by-poll irrespective of whether he gets the BJP ticket or not.
The Ampati by-election has been necessitated after former chief minister Mukul Sangma, who won from two constituencies- Ampati and Songsak, gave up the Ampati seat and retained the latter.
